Held on the first Tuesday of November each year the ‘race that stops a nation’ is an opportunity to try and back a winner.
Australia’s most famous horse race is held over a distance of 3200 metres at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.
The races are a great excuse to dress up in your best and perhaps show off the most colourful items your wardrobe has to offer, with some participating in fashion parades on the field. Marquees are set up for VIP guests, including local, national and international celebrities who attend this festive event. Champagne, wine and gourmet finger foods are usually served on the day.
The race is televised live to millions of people worldwide as many people stop what they are doing shortly before 3 pm on Melbourne Cup Day to tune in to the big race.
